Counterfeit medicines: Businessman was arrested for the death of five pregnant women

In 18 simultaneous raids, the Federal Police this afternoon arrested Jorge Arbia, powerful businessman in the pharmaceutical industry.

Arbia’s arrest took place in a warehouse in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Mataderos, where fund found a large quantity of expired drugs, medicines illegally imported as well as smuggled and stolen medicines.

While it was initially reported that it was the same case of counterfeit drugs in which the businessman Nestor Lorenzo had been arrested,  Police Chief Nestor Roncaglia explained that this is another case which is also investigated bt federal judge Norberto Oyarbide.

Personnell from the Technical Crime Research Division of the Federal Police conducted 18 raids this afternoon in Buenos Aires city and Province.

Commissioner Roncaglia explained that investigations began in 2005 because of the death in 2004 of a pregnant woman in the city of Viedma after she was given “Yectafer”.
