
Nicole Kidman, the Australian actress, requested on Wednesday to the United States Congress “a comprehensive response to violence against women and increased aid for development programs in poor countries.”
She also explained to the Subcommittee on International Organizations and Human Rights of the House of Representatives that “Violence against women and girls is perhaps the violation of human rights more widely and systematically in the world. It does not recognize borders or race or class .”
She also remarked that “Victims of violence need and deserve our support, not a box of strips but a comprehensive and well-funded response that recognizes that women’s rights are human rights”.
Kidman was presented as an ambassador for United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), where he has held since 2006, accompanied by leaders and political activists from the United States.
She stated that “Until recently, violence against women and cause instability that remained hidden. I think the attention highlights the recognition that there is an urgent matter and should occupy a central place on the political agenda.”
She also revealed that “although many countries have laws against gender discrimination, rape, spousal abuse and child marriage in the real world, the laws do not apply and impunity is the norm” .
Nicole Kidman talked about experiences within UNIFEM during her trip to Kosovo, the tragedy of a woman who was repeatedly raped and abused by soldiers, being pregnant and with profound physical and psychological sequelae.
Recalling that “it was the International Tribunal for Yugoslavia,which finally ruled that rape in war will be processed as a crime against humanity”.
