Heavy rain causes floods and traffic chaos
A strong storm in the city has caused a chaos. 57.5 millimeters of rain fell in an hour, causing traffic complications and flooding. Subways, trains, and premetro are suspended. There’s a hail warning for tonight.
The storm broke out at around 15:30 in Capital Federal and in just an hour 57.5 millimeters of water poured down, resulting in floods in the neighborhoods of Palermo, Almagro, Villa Crespo, Villa del Parque, Villa Devoto, Villa Mitre and Liniers, among other areas of Buenos Aires.
Subway lines A and B are giving a reduced service, line D does not stop at Scalabrini Ortiz and Plaza Italia, and the Premetro is suspended. Sarmiento trains are also suspended, while Urquiza is working with delays.
Traffic is collapsed at the exits and entrances to Buenos Aires because of a severe decrease of visibility to 500 meters.
In the area of Constitution, 1600 Independencia Street, a scaffolding fell down damaging 3 vehicles that were parked.
Drivers are advice to keep a safe distance between cars as roads are slippery, and to drive with the lights on.
The storm also caused the fall of trees between km 423 and 435 of Route 8. In that span, a truck overturned and its driver was unhurt, police sources said.
In La Boca and Constitution there were landslides due to the intensity of the storm and strong winds that blew before and during rainstorms.
The Weather Service warning for severe thunderstorms and possible hail storms may affect Capital Federal, the north of Buenos Aires, southeastern and southern Cordoba, Entre Rios and Santa Fe. A sharp temperature decline is expected.
On Saturday, temperatures will range between 16 and 24 degrees. There will be variable cloudiness, rain and drizzle. There will be moderate to mild winds in the south.
