Today new members of Congress were sworn in. The 24 senators were elected on June 28th and will assume their seats in the Upper House.
The ceremony was led by Vice President and Senate President, Julio Cobos, who gave the oath to each of the new legislators.
These new members as the Chamber of Deputies, were sworn in on Thursday and will assume their seats on 10 December, giving the “Kirchneristas” majority power over both houses of Congress.
Among the elected senators who were sworn in today are Luis Judge (New Front-Córdoba) and comprovinciano Ramon Mestre (UCR). The former governor of La Pampa, Carlos Verna (PJ), returns after six years, reviving an old personal rivalry with President Cristina Kirchner from when both were senators.
Others will be sworn in after the validation of the June elections. Among them are established political leaders, dissident Peronist Carlos Reutemann (Santa Fe), Socialist Rubén Giustiniani (Santa Fe) and radical Ernesto Sanz (Mendoza), who in less than two weeks will become the new head of the UCR.
As of 10 December the officers were reduced to being the first minority in both legislative chambers, a situation completely unfamiliar to the Kirchner couple since coming to power more than six years ago.
