At age 43, Romario de Souza Faria, one of the best strikers in football history, played for America, the club his late father, Edevair, loved in the final match of Rio de Janeiro’s second division.
But that’s not all as America, where Edevair dreamt of watching his son play, managed to win the title against Artsul by 2-0.
The former Barcelona player, among others, and third in the list of Brazilian top Goalscorers in the national team following Pelé and Ronaldo, took the field in the 65th minute of play and became the team’s captain.
Though Romario’s presence was symbolic, it is true that the title won by America, the ‘Red Devils’, had him as an active participant since he took over the club’s sports management at this year’s beginning.
“I’m touched, happy. This feeling is different from others i lived. It is a great honour being here and making my father’s dream come true. He was the most important person in the world for me” Romario said
