India test-launched a ballistic missile “Dhanush,” which has the capability of carrying nuclear warheads with a range of 350 kilometers (220 miles) from a Navy ship off the coast of Orissa in the Bay of Bengal.
Previous tests of the Dhanush missile were launched in 2002 and 2007.
India and neighboring Pakistan routinely test-fire missiles. The two countries have fought three wars since partition in 1947, and both countries conducted nuclear weapons tests in 1998.
They also are not signatories to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The Dhanush is a navy version of the surface-to-surface Prithvi missile and can carry both nuclear and conventional warheads.
The missile was successfully fired from a ship in the Bay of Bengal, said S.P. Das, director of Integrated Test Range, a unit of India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation.
“The test met all the requisite parameters,” he said.
