At least 40 people died when a bridge under construction collapsed in India. Several people were injured chances of finding survivors continue to fade.
Dozens of labourers working on the bridge are thought to have fallen into the river Chambal when it collapsed late on Thursday.
Rescuers were struggling to retrieve all the bodies of victims who fell into the river after the bridge collapsed, according to K. Ravikanth, the top administrative official of Kota district, Rajasthan State.
So far, rescuers have pulled out 11 bodies, he said.
Authorities have launched an inquiry into the accident. Two senior project managers, including a South Korean national, have been arrested on culpable homicide charges.
Deadly accidents on construction sites are relatively common in India where health and safety rules are routinely flouted.
The UN’s International Labor Organization estimates that 50,000 people die in the country each year over work-related incidents.
