Miep Gies, the woman who discovered the diary of Anne Frank, after the Jewish girl was deported to a Nazi death camp, died with 100 years old in his vacation home in Holland.
She was born in 1909 and died as a consequence of a fall during Christmas.
Gies was the last survivor of the group of people that from 1942 to 1944, helped to hide Anne Frank and her family from Nazis. The house was situated in Prinsengracht, in Amsterdam, and is now being used as a museum.
But the secret was unveiled and the discovery of the refugees occurred at the morning of 4 August 1944,
All occupants were arrested. Gies was the lucky one who was released because an officer involved in the research was from Austria like her.
Soon after, she returned to her house and found the girl’s diary. She kept it, hoping that Anna will be back someday, but she acknowledged that she had died after the war in Bergen-Belsen.
The only survivor was Anne’s father, so she gave him the diary. The man organized and published it in 1947.
Together with her husband Jan, Miep became a sort of ambassador for the memory of Anna and her diary, one of the most striking evidence of the horrors of the Holocaust.
Miep fought against the so-called deniers and against those who claimed that the diary was false.
