The Red Cross admitted being overwhelmed, as the tension on the border with the Dominican Republic prevents the entry of aid and in the middle of this chaos due to an earthquake, an Argentinean woman had disappeared but fortunately was found alive.
The woman was identified as Diana Cipollone and Deputy Victorio Taccetti said “He talk to her and said that she was in good conditions” And also said that the Argentine authorities believed that Diana Cippollone, who was missing since Tuesday, was “in one of the buildings that collapsed.”
Cipollone was doing assistance tasks for the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) when the earthquake happened, which caused more than a hundred thousand deaths, including the death of the Gendarmerie Gustavo Gomez, 33, a native of the city of Buenos Aires .
Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said that there will be made the shipment of 40 tons of medicines and other medical supplies to aid victims.
“There is so many people that needs help (…) We haven’t got equipment, we have no bags for the corpses” said Pericles Jean-Baptiste, Red Cross spokesman in Haiti.
The 40 tons that are ready to be sent include in particular “specialized kits, usually used to serve injured people during conflicts as well as basic kits that allow them to take care to 10,000 people for three months,” said the spokesman, Florian Westphal.
The entry of humanitarian aid is difficult at the border with the Dominican Republic, because due to the decision of the government, controls to prevent a massive influx of survivors to that country were increased.
It was denounced by the president of the NGO Intervention and Emergency Aid, Moses Belloc. The fear of a massive exodus of people into Dominican generated local authorities increase controls and that difficulties the entry to Haiti.
Now, rescuers are thinking about the possibility of traveling to Puerto Príncipe with a plane chartered by the army of the Dominican Republic, but the air bases in Haiti are being operated manually due to the lack of electricity and the arrival of flights is complicated.
