Al-Jazeera aired a recorded message from the terrorist group Al Qaeda, in which its leader Osama Bin Laden claims responsibility for ”the assassination attempt committed by Nigerian Omar Faruk Abdulmutalab on Christmas Day against U.S. aircraft.”
In the newly released audio tape aired on al-Jazeera, Bin Laden also warns the US there will be more attacks if it continues to support Israel. The authenticity of the tape could not be immediately verified, but the voice resembled earlier recordings of the al-Qaida leader.
In what he called a message “from Osama to Obama”, a reference to U.S. President Barack Obama, bin Laden referred to the failed Christmas day bombing attempt in the United States.
He said sending Umar Farouk Abulmutallab, the Nigerian man charged with the attempt, confirms a previous message sent by the September 11th 2001 attackers.
Sunday’s message would be bin Laden’s first in seven months. In 2009, he had six messages. The last one, on September 25, was “to the European people.” In that message, he urged the countries to reconsider their involvement in the Afghanistan war. “Today Europe is suffering an economic crisis, and its export reputation doesn’t hold true anymore, while America is bleeding economically because of all the wars it is involved in,” his last message said. “Think about how Europe will fare when America pulls out of Afghanistan. You will be left to suffer alone the rage of the people you oppressed.”
