Salvador Cabanas, a star on one of Mexico’s most popular teams and Paraguay’s National Team, is in serious condition from after hewas shot in the head in the restroom of a bar in Mexico City.
Cabanas, 29, who was expected to help spearhead the Paraguay attack at this year’s World Cup, was possibly involved in a fight or had been the victim of a robbery, Mexico City’s top prosecutor said.
The footballer underwent seven hours of emergency surgery and was reported to be in critical, but stable condition.
Dr. Ernesto Martinez, who performed the surgery, said he was unable to remove the bullet, which is lodged in the back of Cabanas’ brain.
Dr. Martinez said it would have done more damage if doctors tried to extract the bullet.
Cabanas had four goals and led all scorers in Mexico’s Interliga tournament, which concluded at the Home Depot Center 13 days ago. He scored 125 goals in 218 matches in eight years in Mexico with Chiapas and America.
Also, Cabanas scored six goals with Paraguay in qualifying for this year’s World Cup in South Africa.
