Paraguayan striker Salvador Cabanas is reportedly in “very good” condition as he has regained consciousness from a heavily sedated state and spoke to his family for the first time since he was shot in a Mexico City bar last week.
The 29 year-old was shot in the bathroom of the bar in the early hours of Monday last week and the bullet remains lodged in his brain.
“He is speaking normally, asks questions and greeted his doctors and family,” Dr Ernesto Martinez, who operated on Cabañas, told a news conference. “Things are very favorable, much more encouraging,” he added.
The CF America Mexico prolific striker had scored 18 goals in 24 matches this season and Sunderland manager Steve Bruce admitted he was tracking him.
Cabañas reportedly has no recollection of the incident which left him hospitalized, although he was able to acknowledge his family members and a team of officials from his club. He hasn’t been authorized to declare before the authorities yet. Since he was shot, there has been an outpouring of support for him both in Paraguay and Mexico.
