A record number of men are undergoing plastic surgery in Britain to reduce their “man boobs”.

Figures published by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons revealed that operations to correct gynecomastia in men grew by 80%, while overall male cosmetic surgery grew by 21%.

Breast reduction is now the third most popular cosmetic surgery for men behind nose jobs and eyelid surgery.

The DailyRecord reports that breast reductions for men have increased since celebrities like Jack Nicholson, Simon Cowell, Tony Blair, Robbie Williams and Chris Moyles, were pictured flaunting their man boobs on beaches and yachts.

“Probably, heightened media attention … has allowed men to realise the positive outcomes that can be achieved,” said Rajiv Grover, the consultant and association secretary who collated the audit.

“There’s a lot of pressure on men now to shape up. Men’s grooming is on the rise, and big fashion houses are using half-naked men, such a David Beckham, to advertise.”

Nigel Mercer, consultant plastic surgeon and President of the BAAPS, said: The public’s interest in aesthetic surgery appears to remain strong and indeed growing quite considerably among UK males, despite the economic downturn.

“Wide media coverage has clearly helped to educate both men and women about the latest advances and choices available as well as the potential risks of these treatments.”

The procedure removes as much as a litre of fat, it usually costs £2,000, and it takes about 90 minutes.

Last week comedian and actor Ricky Gervais spoke about his “man boobs”. He said: “I don’t want to see this body. Nobody does.

“I went down to my boxer shorts in my last film. Yes, there were some breasts – but they were big, hairy and mine.”
