An El Dorado County teenager, Tylar Witt, and her boyfriend have pleaded not guilty to murdering the girl’s mother.
The teenager, 15, who’s being tried as an adult, pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity Monday. Co-conspirator Steven Colver, 19, pleaded not guilty.
Authorities say the pair plotted to kill Joanne Witt, 47, because she stood in the way of their relationship. The woman was found stabbed to death in her El Dorado Hills home last June, shortly after she had reported Colver for alleged statutory rape.
Witt could face 25 years to life in prison if found guilty.
Prosecutors have said they won’t pursue the death penalty in the case. Colver is believed to have stabbed Witt to death after Tylar Witt allegedly spiked her mother’s drink with a prescription medication.
