French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s center-right party was largely defeated at the regional elections on Sunday, Interior Ministry figures showed today.

Tens of thousands of Italians have conducted a general strike and massive demonstrations in Rome’s main square to protest against Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s attempts to stack local elections.

President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner telephoned the elect- president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, and congratulated him for his triumph in the ballot held yesterday. In addition, Kirchner promised to be present in the ascencion ceremony next March 11.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, met the next president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, to carry out the handover of power next March 11.

On this day, the Chilean population going to decide who will replace current President Michelle Bachelet, to govern until 2014. More than 8 million citizens vote again to elect the new president of Chile, in the second round.

On Thursday, the candidates ended their campaigns for the presidential election in Chile. Ruling party candidate Eduardo Frei and conservative candidate Sebastian Piñera would achieve a draw, according to polls.
