Argentina took a 2-1 lead over Sweden in their Davis Cup first-round series Saturday when David Nalbandian (who was a late replacement for Leonardo Mayer) and Horacio Zeballos defeated Robin Soderling and Robert Lindstedt 6-2, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) in the doubles.

Mayer commited many mistakes in the first set and Johansson was opportunistic. But then he gained in confidence and beated the Swedish 6-4 7-5 6-4. Argentina still dreams.

Almost unknown Frenchman Florent Serra ’stole’ the first set against Nikolay Davydenko, the player who has the best form in the Tour, but a couple of mistakes close to the end of the second, gave the Russian the chance to break and totally dominate from there on. The match ended 6-7, 6-4, 6-1.

In three tiring sets, David managed to beat Spaniard Gimeno-Traver despite trainer’s recommendations of retiring because of an injury in his right thigh.’I couldn’t retire as the doctor adviced, not in front of this people’, said Nalbandian, who was chanted during the whole match, which ended 6-7, 6,4 and 7-6.

David was able to finish what he started yesterday when he won the first set by 6-2 against Italian Potito Starace. It was a little bit harder today, as expected, but he managed to close the match in the second set’s tie-break. Nalbandian’s comeback to the Tour starts at the telmex Cup in Buenos aires. The Telmex Cup starts today on it’s 10th anniversary and David is ready to make his come-back after a hip surgery and an injury in his abdomen that prevented him from returning earlier. Argentineans had two good news last night, because of wins by both Juan Monaco and Gisela Dulko, to get into the third round. ‘Pico’ recovered after being two sets down against Frenchman Michael Llodra, and the Tigre player defeated Serbian Ana Ivanovic, seeded number 20, playing a great match.
